One Month Yoga Teacher Training Experience in India | My Reviews
I completed one month Yoga Teacher Training at the Yoga Institute Santacruz, Mumbai, India (http://www.theyogainstitute.org/) in April 2010 and I would like to share my experience at The Yoga Institute, Mumbai, India.
Overall experience was good but I wanted to learn more details about Yogic practices (Asanas, Pranayamas, Bandhas, Kriyas). In my opinion, the course is suitable for people who have not practiced Yoga before or have very less experience with Yoga and good for people especially from India as teachers quote such examples while teaching theory & concepts which could be understood by Indians only. In my humble opinion "The Yoga Institute" in Mumbai, India is not for people who are looking for deeper yoga training in a traditional way. Many asanas and pranayamas have been simplified to a great deal which is good for people who are not able to perform difficult postures. I have to agree that the teachers (who were part of one month Yoga teacher training program that I attended) were not experienced enough when it comes to practical teaching of Asanas, Pranayamas and other practical aspects of Yoga and there was no uniformity among themselves. I was sad to see that many of the teachers themselves were not able to demonstrate the Asanas properly.
The satvik food was served 4 times a day at the intervals of almost 4 hours to the hostelers which I really liked. The kitchen was always clean and food was served in big hall next to the kitchen. Most people would eat food sitting cross legged on the floor, the traditional way of eating food. The institute emphasizes that the yoga teachings not to be confined to mat only but encourages people to make yoga a way of life. They also put lots of weight to achieve a “Balanced state of mind” and not let it disturbed by other happenings in life. I also enjoyed Hansaji's enlightening talks on the yogic way of life.
Being originally from India I enjoyed the overall experience but I would like to explore some other Yoga Teacher Training places in India like “Yoga Vidya Dham, Nasik, Maharashtra, India” http://www.yogapoint.com/, "Bihar Yoga" (Yoga Institute and Ashram), http://www.biharyoga.net next time which seems to be providing yoga teacher training in more traditional way.
Please note: Yoga is much more than twisting your body in different positions but in my post & review above I meant physical aspects of it such as Asanas, Pranayamas, Meditation, Kriyas, Bandhas. Reviews given above about "The Yoga Institue" are my personal reviews and other's reviews & experience may be different than that of mine

Would you suggest this centre for the teacher training especially when my wife has been doing yoga for the last 9 years?

ReplyDeleteOverall experience was good but I wanted to learn more details about Yogic practices (Asanas, Pranayamas, Bandhas, Kriyas). In my opinion, the course is suitable for people who have not practiced Yoga before or have very less experience with Yoga. However, the course schedule is made in such a way that everyone learns the systematic way of teaching yoga in one hour class. Teachers are well qualified and have in-depth knowledge about each and every subject they teach and also answer to all the questions very patiently and the way it can be understood easily. The teachers (who were part of one month Yoga teacher training program that I attended) were quite experienced enough when it comes to practical teaching of Asanas and other practical aspects of Yoga. Pranayam and mudras were not part of this course…these were taught only for couple of days in the last week of the TTC that too not in detailed manner. They emphasize to join the advance course for deeper knowledge. However this TTC is not for the people who are looking for deeper yoga training. It’s a basic course on Yog as those who do not have any knowledge of yog can also join for this course.

ReplyDeleteElena Turmasova, when you say "they" who are you referring to? Every school provides a certificate of completion. You should check directly with the school/institute what kind of accreditation their course have? For example are they accredited by associations like – Yoga Alliance USA, Council of Yoga Accreditation International, International Yoga Federation and Yoga Alliance International if that matters to you.
ReplyDeletePlease note: Not necessarily a yoga school in India should be accredited by such authorities mentioned above and still that Yoga school might be providing very valuable teaching. In some cases accrediting a yoga school in India by a foreign authority could be seen as showing a lamp to Sun :-)

Hello Raj , I was so confused between The yoga point, Nashik and The yoga institute. Basically, being a yoga teacher is my ultimate passion . Since past 3 years I am practicing yoga. Now I wanna learn how to encourage others while doing yoga. The basic reason behind confusion was :I suppose The yoga institute is accredited by Yoga alliance , where as the yoga point isnt.
